Marriage* | 16 Aug 1928 | On Thursday, 16 Aug 1928 aged 21 Sidney Arthur Williams married Ivy Kathleen Game in West Ham, ESS, ENG.5 |
Note | He worked in the sugar refining industry at Tate & Lyles and also Martineaus whilst living in West Ham, Greater London. Married Ivy Kathleen Game in 1928. They had 2 children, Ronald Sydney 4/11/28 and Alan John 6/2/32 both born in West Ham. The family moved from West Ham in 1938 to Braintree, Essex and again in 1940 to Cheyne House, Felsted, Essex, where Sydney worked for the British Sugar Corporation. He and Ivy lived at Felsted until 1960 when they emigrated to Southern Rhodesia. Sydney worked in the Tobacco industry during his stay in Rhodesia. After his retirement in 1976 they returned to the UK living at Wokingham Berkshire. Ivy died 21 October 1981. Sydney survived two major accidents during his lifetime. The first occurred whilst at the Felsted BSC factory. He was on the factory roof when he slipped and fell through a skylight onto a floor some 20 feet below. He suffered a broken jaw and ribs, smashed both kneecaps, which had to be removed, and was severely bruised. He was incapacitated for many months and thereafter walked with a slight limp. The second incident happened in Rhodesia. He was involved in a motor vehicle accident and his right arm was badly damaged. He never recovered full use of the arm.1
Note* | Sidney's eldest son went to Rhodesia with his wife and subsequently moved to RSA. Sidney and Ivy followed him there. Ivy had heart problems, apparently caused by Rheumatic Fever contracted during 1931 when her brother died of the same condition. She was never aware that she had had the illness. In Rhodesia her condition was aggravated by the altitude and it became necessary for her to have an operation. This was carried out in 1964 at the Groot Schurr Hospital, Cape Town, by Christian Barnard (before he became famous) who repaired a faulty Mitral valve. The operation was very successful.1
Death* | 10 Mar 1984 | Sidney Arthur Williams died at age 77 on 10 Mar 1984 (Sydney Arthur had a cardiac failure in late 1983 and eventually underwent an operation to repair a failed heart chamber wall at St Georges Hospital, Tooting. This was not successful and after several months of gradual deterioration he died on 10 March 1984. He is buried together with his wife Ivy Kathleen in grounds of Barkham Church, Wokingham, Berkshire.)1 |
