Note* | Connie Williams tells us that Alfred WILLIAMS was originally a Revenue Officer, captain of a cutter operating in Cornish waters against smugglers. He came to the attention Of Queen Victoria and was appointed her Chief Yachtsman. He and his family took up residence on the Royal Estate on the Isle of Wight. Three of his sons joined the navy, but two of them deserted in Australia. The action of these two brothers lead to their father's disgrace and he was demoted to ordinary seaman and forced out of Queen Victoria's service.2 | |
Birth* | 18 Jun 1845 | Alfred Albert Williams , son of John Williams and Elizabeth Allen, was born on Wednesday, 18 Jun 1845 at Illogan, Portreath, CON, ENG.1,3,4 |
Baptism | 15 Oct 1845 | Alfred Albert Williams was baptized on 15 Oct 1845 at Illogan, Portreath, CON, ENG; Father named as John and mother as Eliza.5,6 |
(Witness) Census 1851 | 30 Mar 1851 | He was listedin the household of John Williams and Elizabeth Allen in the census of 1851 at No 1 Illogan, at Portreath; John (Chief Officer Coast Guard) and family, including 5 year old Alfred Albert are living at the Square, Portreath. Note | 18 Jun 1863 | Alan Williams tells us that Alfred joined the Coastguard on his 18 birthday on 18 June 1863. He enlisted initially for 10 years. On his enlistment record he is described as 5’ 7’’, brown hair, light blue eyes and fresh complexion. I think I have to discount the disgraced Alfred Albert Williams story as the dates just don’t add up. AA was born 18 Jun 1845. Joined the RN Jun1863 on his 18 birthday. He may have been to Naval School before that because he is not with the family during the 1861 census, and I haven’t been able to locate him at that time. By the 1871 census he 25 and married to Emma and working as a ‘Leading Seaman’ on the ‘Desmond’, a Coastguard cutter. They have 3 children at that time Alfred 6, John 4 and Percy 1. I think we have to accept this as correct. According to his Service Record (I am sending you a copy of this) he was discharged from the navy in 1876. Under the ‘Discharged’ column entries look like ‘Invalided’ and ‘Haslar’. Haslar is the Naval Hospital at Gosport so he may have been injured or is ill. So presumably that’s the end of his RN career. At this date son John Jack would be 11 years and Vivian 4. A bit young to marry, have children and jump ship, don’t you think? On 18 Jun 1863.8 |
Marriage* | 14 Aug 1864 | On Sunday, 14 Aug 1864 aged 19 Alfred Albert Williams married Emma Maria Martin, daughter of Edmund Martin and Mary Ann Waters, in St Thomas', Mile End Old Town, MDX, ENG.8,9 |
Census 1871* | 2 Apr 1871 | The Census of 2 Apr 1871 lists Alfred Albert Williams and Emma Maria Martin at at 12 Castle St, Whippingham, East Cowes, IOW, ENG. Seaman RN Coast Guard Service ship "Desmond". Alfred A is 25, Emma 26, with 3 children.10 |
Residence* | 1873 | In 1873 Alfred and Emma lived at 11 Clarence Rd, East Cowes, IOW, ENG.11 |
Note | 1876 | He served on Revenue Cutter ‘Hector’ from the 1 January 1873 until the end of his service. Alfred signed on for a further 10 years in the Coastguard on the 18 June 1873. He was entitled to wear 2 Good Conduct Stripes and his Character was ‘exemplary’. He was promoted on 29 March 1873. Some time in 1876 (cannot decipher the date) he was ‘invalided’ out of the service but the entry is so bad I cannot determine the reason. in 1876.8 |
Census 1881* | 3 Apr 1881 | In the census of 1881 Alfred Albert Williams and Emma Maria Martin appeared at 10 Sussex St, Poplar, MDX, ENG. Head age 35 , seaman. AA is described as a seaman, now apparently working for Union Castle Line, but no mention of a ship! It is said that he was a purser on the "Windsor Castle". The last of the 6 sons was born in 1880.12,8 |
Death* | 8 Dec 1898 | Alfred Albert Williams died at age 53 at 29 Umvar Street, Poplar, MDX on 8 Dec 1898 (Alfred Albert Williams, male, age 53 years, Naval Pensioner. Cause of death Chronic Bronchitis, Emphysema and Exhaustion).8,13 |
