Note* | The family moved to Hainault early 1942 and although Will was 41 he was sent before a tribunal to be assessed for his fitness for the Navy. They decided that he was fit to serve and he was sent to Skegness for training (it was at the Butlins camp but they were all given names which sounded like ships so that nobody knew where they were). He also went to Chatham and Plymouth. He was assigned as a steward to HMS Bulolo which sailed to Asia and Singapore. This ship played a significant part in the war. It was used in the invasion of North Africa in 1942, Sicily in 1943 and Anzio in 1944. It was the HQ for Gold Beach on D-Day carrying tri-service commanders and staff, it was also used to receive the Japanese surrender at Singapore in 1945. When they crossed the Equator they had what they called a crossing the line ceremony and Earl Mountbatten was on the ship at the time. William also went to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore which he thought was a lovely place and he said he would have loved to have taken Lily to Singapore to see how great it was. He was there for the relief of Changi Prison but he didn't say too much about it. He returned to the UK towards the end of 1945 and he let Lily know that he would be passing through London but not staying, so she took all the family to Victoria Station to see him before he went on to Plymouth. When Will went in the Navy Lily had to take over his business in Spitalfields Market which was delivering fruit and vegetables to London Hotels.4 | |
