Nickname | Thomas James Nelson also went by the name of Jim Born Thomas James, known as Jim, the last of the family of Eliza and James. Jim attended Denmark St. School. He served in the Merchant Navy for some years, and then went to work at the I.R.G.P. works until he retired. When he married Mary, she was a young widow who had lost both her husband and young baby within a year. She was a woman of striking looks, and these same looks were inherited by all her daughters, especially their lovely eyes. This family lived at No.7 James Street which is remembered by me as a home of fun and jollity, a party with a piano playing every Saturday night. They had nine children.1 | |

She played for the Russell O.S. after leaving school. She worked in the A.G.D of the Post Office, starting as a clerical assistant, and rising to become an executive officer. She represented her office at table tennis at which she excelled. During World War II she was evacuated with her department to Harrogate, but after her father's death applied for transfer back to London in order to be with her Mother whom she cared for until her Mother's death in 1956. In 1956 she married Chris, who at that time was with a firm of Merchant Bankers but has since changed jobs to be with Barclays Unicorn Trust. During the war he served in the Royal Navy. He is a keen sportsman, football, cricket and swimming. (He still is an evening swimming instructor). At one time he played football for Raith Rovers, (Scottish League). He still has interest in managing a team of youngsters, I believe he still trains with them. Vi teaches the skill of cake decorating at evening classes. Two of her pupils have been nieces, June and Jean. She also works as a bookkeeper for a small finance company. They have one daughter.2 | |

When he was about seven years old, he suffered an accident with a tram, which caused his left arm to be amputated from the elbow. This did not handicap him very much. As a boy he played football and later was able to drive his Father's coal wagons and high carts with a pair of horses. His Father told of his ability to swing a sack if coal (1Cwt) on his back using only his one arm. It was he who drove his Uncle Bill to London Bridge station. After his Father's death when the family business was discontinued, he was employed by the West Ham Council as Hall Keeper at the Public Hall, Canning Town. Today he is retired. Emily and Wally have four children.2 | |
