Note* | Mary Ann Nelson - Known as Jinnie born 1870. Jinnie married Alfred Groves, who worked on a Castle Line ship from London to Capetown. He left his ship for a Railway pioneer Regiment in the Boer War. He was taken ill with enteritis, and died outside Johanesburg. Jinnie went to live with her Mother Eliza, and worked as a tailoress, whilst her Mother helped care for her two sons. About 1920, she married George Gibbons and they went to live at Stoke-by-Clare, Suffolk. Here their hospitality knew no bounds, and their home was often full to over- flowing with visitors. She was a much loved Aunt, and at Stoke-by- Clare, cousin would meet up with cousin. She had contact with many branches of the family. The Thomas's in Michigan. The Sedleys and the Scott families of Southampton. The Sittinbourne relatives who were children and Grandchildren of her Uncle William Davies. She corresponded with the Thomas Family of Northport, Michigan and the Belper family of Baltimore Maryland. Charlotte Thomas visited her in 1937. Nephew Ernest and neice Jessie, also stayed with her during their re-visits to England. Stoke-by-Clare must hold many nostalgic memories for many of us, as quite a number confessed to re-visiting the village in recent years. It is to be regretted that these records were not begun during her lifetime, as all these contacts, would have yielded a wealth of information, - now lost. Jinnie died in1940. As stated she had two sons.2 | |
