Note* | Arthur David - born 1916. Married Elizabeth Reed, then Lilian Bones. Known as Dave, he attended Denmark St. School, and left to become a city messenger boy. Then he worked for Carter-Patterson Haulage company, and then Burt Boulton & Haywood Timber Co, Then as a driver with Eric Taylor, in company with his Brother-in-law, Les Keenes. In 1939 he married Elizabeth Reed. After he was called for active service in 1940, he was sent to Halifax in Canada. He was one of the first of the troops on a U.S.A. ship, before the U.S.A. entered the war. He travelled westward to Trinidad, then to Cape Town, Bombay and eventually found himself in Singapore, which was soon to fall to the Japanese. He was taken prisoner on 15th February 1942. He was forced to work on the Burma-Siam Railway, and lived in the P.O.W. camp Tanakan, which was later the site the film unit used when making the renowned film " Bridge on the river Kwai ". He eventually was sent back to Changi Jail and released in September 1945. He was 3 years and 7 months in the hands of the Japanese, upon his release he weighed 5 stone 10 lbs. He arrived back in England October 1945, where his family met him at Euston, but alas not his wife, whom he later divorced in 1947. He married Lilian Bones the same year. They are both interested in motoring and are members of the West Ham Motor Club. In 1952 he was recalled for training during the Berlin Crisis. This led to his entering the Roehampton Military Hospital. His traumatic experiences during his time as a P.O.W. left him with a legacy of tropical diseases and even today, he is still a patient of Roehampton Hospital. He has had five operations caused through tropical diseases and maltreatment in the hands of the Japanese. He suffered problems with his nose as a result from a blow from a butt of a Japanese rifle. Today he is a driver with a ships repair firm in the London Docks.2 | |

Note* | Arthur Haydon Nelson - born 1872. Arthur married Olive Thorne. He left school at the age of eleven or twelve, and his first job was with a pork butcher. On Saturdays he worked until midnight for a meagre wage. Later he was employed by the I.R.G.P. where he was a stoker. At some time he was also a seaman. In the 1920's he began his own business. First as a milk retailer, and later on, as a coal merchant which he continued until his death in 1941, aged 69 years. This family lived in 21 New Barn Street, Plaistow, E.13. This house was razed to the ground by Hitler's bombs in May 1941. His wife Olive, and daughter Grace were in the air raid shelter, but Arthur who was by this time a very sick man was in bed in the ground floor. He was rescued by his daughter Grace, who carried him in her arms unaided, to the Wardens Post. This greatly impressed Arthur who marvelled at the love and strength which enabled her to do this. He died in hospital two months later. After his death, Olive made a new home at 21, James Street, cared for by her daughter Violet. She died in 1956, aged 83 years. There were eight children.4 | |

She was so much accepted as part of the family, that I was some years of age before I realised that she was an older cousin. She spent her last years in Balaam Street Hospital, but was regularly visited by this same family. She died in 1969.2 | |

Note* | Clara Nelson - born 1874 died 1962 aged 87. Married Norman Hopkins 1902. Clara was the first member of the Nelson family to attend Denmark St. School, when it first opened in 1878. She is mentioned in her Mother's letter to Jane Thomas (see page 3). Norman came from Inkpen, Wilts. His father and brothers were shepherds. Norman was a butler, Clara was a cook, and it was during the time they were both in gentlemen's service, they met, married and lived with the same family for thirty six years. Later they retired to live at Peterborough in 1938. Clara died as a result of burns, her clothing caught fire as she prepared breakfast, and although she had been able to put out the fire and the room was practically undamaged, her own injury caused her death. They had two children.2 | |
