Chapter 2 More Early Links to Virginia

Richard, Avy, and John

This chapter introduces three households whose origin can be traced back to Virginia.  They are:

·                     Richard Bandy and possible wives Jane, Elizabeth, and Lucy are the ancestors of many Bandys today.

·                     Avy Bandy, who may be Richard’s brother or sister-in-law, is assumed to be the parent of both the George who moved to North Carolina and the Thomas who may have moved to Tazewell County.

·                     John Bandy who married Rachel Bergen and Mary VanNyes. The family moved to  Kentucky, Indiana, and Iowa.

Richard Bandy and Family

Richard Bandy (71, 14-1) (July 8, 1722 to July 21, 1795) is the early Bandy about whom the most is known and written.  Richard’s possible wives Jane Cummins (70, 14-0)(1720 - 1755), Elizabeth Cardwell[1]  (71, 14-37) ( ? - 1794), and Lucy Justice (72, 15-141) and their children are well documented in Burt and Jane Eubank’s Bandy Gallimaufry.[2]   The overview of this family presented here is drawn primarily from the Eubank’s exceptional work.  Many more details, including information relating to subsequent generations, are found in their book.

Family tradition says that Richard and Jane came to America in the early to middle 1700's.  Tradition suggests that Richard was born in Liverpool, England and that Jane was from Dublin, Ireland.  However, there is little evidence of Richard having a wife Jane, and little creditable evidence of Richard's birth in either England or America.  Bandy Gallimaufry suggests alternative theories including the possibility that the first American Richard Bandy was this Richard’s father and the possibility that the Richard who married Jane was this Richard’s son.  If there was an earlier Richard, he would have been born around 1700. The earlier Richard could have been married to Jane Cummins, and the central North Carolina Bandys including James, Robert, Solomon, and John as well as being the parents of the Richard, Avy, and spinster Elizabeth, discussed below.

Bandy Gallimaufry reports detailed information regarding Richard, Elizabeth, and their children (Mary, Solomon, Thomas, Richard, John, George, Sarah, Ann (Nancy), and Eliza).  If Richard did marry a Jane,  some of the children likely were her’s.

Perhaps Elizabeth's previously undetermined maiden name is Cardwell.  This possibility is based on the 1780 Henrico County, Virginia will of Thomas Cardwell which names Francis Epperson and Martha his wife along with Richard Bandy and his wife Elizabeth as devisees.[3]  This suggests that Elizabeth and Martha are Thomas' daughters. As noted below, Richard apparently  sold real estate to John Cardwell, Elizabeth’s brother.

The earliest contemporary document establishing the presence of Richard in Virginia is a March 24, 1755 land purchase in Cumberland County, Virginia. Other real estate records report transactions in Bedford , Franklin, and Botetourt Counties extending to 1788, and subsequent transfers by Richard’s estate. Some of the later transactions may have been by son Richard. The Revolutionary War Pension application by son Thomas reports his birth on June 22, 1748 in Cumberland County, Virginia suggesting that the family was in Virginia several years before the first land purchase.

An alternative theory to those presented in Bandy Gallimaufry is that Richard is somehow related to the Bannings of Maryland.  Two known Richard Bannings are accounted for (see the previous chapter).  Should this Richard be related to the Bannings he would have to be another previously unidentified member of that family group. As noted in chapter 1, there are references to three brother Richard, James, and John.  However, there is little information on that group.

Richard, his sons, his grandsons, and his great grandsons all had large families. As a result, he is the ancestor of many Bandys in America today.

The following summary is based on research by Burt and Jane Eubank (1994) and Robert Haviland  (1995), and others.

Cumberland County

March 24, 1755: Richard Bandy purchased 200 acres of land from Samuel Phelps for the sum of thirty pounds. This is the first record of Richard in Virginia. Source: Deed Book 2, p.202. Son  Thomas in his Revolutionary War pension application reported his birth in Cumberland in 1748 indicating that the family likely was there for sometime before the purchase.

June 1756:  Spinster Elizabeth Bandy sued her former lover, William Moss, for jilting her. Elizabeth paid witness fees to several individuals including Richard Bandy and Elizabeth Bandy (wife of Richard).  This indicates that there was more than one Elizabeth Bandy in  Cumberland County.  Elizabeth won the case and was awarded 50 pounds and expenses.  In June 1759, Elizabeth Bandy sued Ann Moss, administrator of the estate of William Moss and was awarded money and tobacco. It is not clear whether this was a separate action, or Elizabeth was attempting to collect the award from the original case. It seems unlikely that Richard and Elizabeth would have a daughter old enough to be involved in the listed preceding as they are commonly assumed to have been born about 1720.  A daughter named Elisa was born sometime later.  That might suggest that she was Richard’s sister.  If so, then it very well could be that their father was the first Richard.

1760: Richard Bandy was issued a patent him 48 acres in Cumberland County on the Horse Pen Branch adjacent to Francis George Stegars. The patent is signed by Francis Fauquier who was Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, in the name of George the Second (King of England). Source: Patent No. 33, 1756-1751, p.899.

August 24, 1761: Richard Bandy sold 48 acres to James Aiken for the sum of 20 pounds. The land is described as a patent dated 1760 in the Parish of Southam. Richard makes his mark, and Elizabeth releases her dower right. Source: Deed Book 3, p. 195.

November 24, 1766: Richard Bandy and wife Elizabeth sell 200 acres of land to John Cardwell for the sum of eighty pounds. Others who have examined the document concluded the name was Cambell.  Source: Deed Book 4, pp.114. As noted above, Elizabeth is thought to be Thomas Cardwell’s daughter. Thomas Cardwell had a son John who would have been Elizabeth’s brother.

Bedford County

October 24, 1767: Richard Bandy purchased property from John Bradshaw.  The property is described as the 168A Lick Run property.

May 22, 1773: William Hayth sold to Richard Bandy of Bedford  92 acres, granted by patent to Hayth in 1771.Source: Deed Book 5, p. 63.

October 1, 1785: Richard Bandy sold to George Bandy the 168A Lick Run property.

Virginia Tax Lists 1782 and 1787: Include the households of Richard (who owned six slaves), Thomas, and George.  Son Thomas, in his pension application, states that he was living in Franklin County when he entered service in the militia. As Franklin County was not formed until 1785, he may have been living in that part of Bedford which later Franklin County. Thomas was evidently still living in Bedford County when his first wife died.

March 12, 1791: Nancy Bandy (Richard’s daughter?) married James Neighbors.

Franklin County

1785: Franklin County was formed.

1786: Richard Bandy is on Tax list "A" in the District of Moses Greer, Gentleman and Commissioner. Richard is listed with one poll. Could Moses be the father of Aquila who married Richard's daughter Elizabeth?

1786-1789: Richard Bandy appeared frequently in court over land payments.

1791: Thomas's son Cary or Carey married Frances Wood (also spelled Woods).

Botetourt County

1769: Botetourt County was formed from Augusta County  which was formed in 1745 from Orange County.

1782: John Bandy and Richard Bandy are listed among troops raised in the county. The same two are listed as taxpayers.  In Thomas' pension file he states he moved to Botetourt County after the war.

August 10, 1785: Richard Bandy granted leave to include his lands in one survey. Source: Annals of Southwest Virginia, 1769-1800.

1785: The enumeration of Botetourt County, Captain Graham’s District, includes Richard Bandy’s household with nine white people, one dwelling building, and two other buildings.

September 13, 1786: Richard Bandy bought 100 acres from John Mills. This land is described as being located on Wolf Creek, a branch of the Roanoke formerly in Augusta County. Source: Deed Book 3, pp. 421.

July 18,  1787: Richard and Thomas Bandy along with Christian Vineyard (sometimes spelled Wynart) were granted 250 acres on Wolf Creek and the Roan Oak adjoining their own lands and the lands of John Mills. Source: Grant No. 9, 1787, p. 718

September 9, 1788: Richard bought 254 acres from Rowland Madison and wife Anna. The land is described as being part of a patent bearing the date  March 1, 1773. Source: Deed Book 4, p. 24 or 124.

September 10, 1788: Richard Bandy appointed Constable in Capt. Graham's Company and in Capt. Madison's Company. Source: Annals of Southwest Virginia, 1787-1800.

December 9, 1788: Thomas Lewis appointed Constable in place of Richard Bandy. Source: Annals of Southwest Virginia, 1769.

1790: Richard Bandy received a grant of 350 acres on waters of Wolf Creek, adjoining his own land (Grants No. 41 1798-99, pp.455).  His 350 acres plus 254 acres acquired from Madison adds to the 604 acres owned by Richard. Richard Bandy pays taxes on 620 acres.

1791: Richard Bandy paid taxes on 620 acres of land. Richard Bandy married Nancy Lewellen. This could be Thomas's son.

1791, 1792, 1793, 1794, and 1795: Richard Bandy paid taxes on 620 acres of land.

May 8, 1794: Martha Bandy (Thomas’ daughter) married Henry Vanover. The marriage is also reported on June 7, 1794.

May 23, 1794: Richard Bandy Sr. and Lucy Justice were married by Henry Vanover.  Since Richard Sr. names "Lucy" as his widow in his will it follows that this is Richard Sr. Source: Kegley's Virginia pp. 540.

1795: Richard C. Bandy paid taxes on 125 acres of land. Thomas Bandy paid taxes on 125 acres of land. Richard Bandy died leaving a will dated  July 21. Richard’s will named his wife Lucy along with the following children: Thomas, Richard, John and George  Mary Lewis, Eliza Greer relict of Aquila Greer, Sarah Jordan and Katy, an infant.  He also lists Henry Bandy, son of Ann Bandy, now wife of James Neighbors. One theory is that Henry is a grandson by a deceased unnamed son and a former daughter-in-law, now remarried. However, Nancy Bandy married James Neighbors on March 12, 1791 in Bedford County. If Nancy and Ann are the same person, it could mean that Henry was born out of wedlock. Richard appointed sons Thomas and Richard as executors. Signatures show Richard as Richard C. Bandy and Thomas as Thomas Bandy Jr.

1796: Richard Bandy, the son, pays taxes.

1797, 1797, 1798, 1799: Taxes paid again. Lucy Bandy married George T. Monicle (Monical). This is assumed to by the remarriage of Richards widow.

1799: Solomon Bandy married Mary Barnett. This is assumed to be the grandson of Richard and son of Richard, Jr.  Martha Bandy married James Cornelius.

1800: Richard Bandy paid taxes on 100 acres. Thomas paid taxes on 125 acres. Richard Bandy acquired Wolf Creek property 350A from the State of Virginia. Thomas Bandy appointed surveyor of highway. Source: Annals of Southwest VA 1787-1800.

1801: Richard Bandy sold 187 acres to William Harress, described as part of 350 acres granted in 1790 plus "a small piece of Bandy Survey of 100 acres."  Source: Deed Book 7, p.483. Elizabeth Bandy marries James David on October 13. Source: Annals of Southwest Virginia.

Richard Bandy and wife Jane sold 298 acres to George Kish, described as part of the 350 acres granted in 1790 plus "part of 100 acres sold to Bandy in 1786."  Source: Deed Book 7, pp.465.  Richard Bandy executor of Richard Bandy deceased, sold to Thomas Bandy a parcel of land conveyed by Robert Madison deceased. Source: Deed Book 7, pp. 498.  Thomas Bandy paid taxes on 125 acres. Richard Bandy paid taxes on 100 acres. Richard Bandy paid taxes on 350 acres.  Richard Bandy sold 254 acres to Thomas Bandy. This is the property acquired by Richard Sr from Rowland Madison in 1788.

1802: Thomas Bandy sold 2 acres for a meeting house. Source: Deed Book 8, pp. 38-1806: Thomas Bandy married Nancy CraddockPatsy Bandy, daughter of John, married William Campbell.

1807: Jane Bandy, daughter of John, married Hezekiah Brown.

1808: Thomas Bandy accounts for the estate of his father Richard Bandy. Thomas signs for the estate. The document notes that legacies were paid in 1800 to Richard, John, George, Thomas, Elizabeth Greer, Thomas Lewis, Sarah Jordan plus Lucy Bandy the widow, her dowry.

1810: Christian Vineyard (Wynart) sold 115 acres to Thomas Bandy, described as part of the 250 acres granted to Richard and Thomas Bandy and Christian Wynart in 1787. Source: Deed Book 10, p. 241. Thomas sold 135 acres to Christian Wynart, described as part of the 250 acres granted as above. Source: Deed Book 10, p.245. These two transactions on the same date represent a division by the Bandy and Wynart families of the 250 acres granted in 1787. Polly Bandy marries Jonathan James.  The Census of Botetourt County lists four Bandy households: Thomas and John, who were presumably Richards’ sons, James, who may have been Thomas's son, and William, who may have been George’s son.

1811: Thomas Bandy and wife Nancy sold 10 acres to his sister Sarah Jordan for $200 on March 11. The land is described as part of the 250 acres granted to Richard and Thomas Bandy and Christian Wynart. Source: Deed Book 10, p. 304 Thomas Bandy sold to Jacob Gish, Jr. 186 acres for $900 described as 164 acres from the 254 acre Madison property and 22 acres from the Richard-Thomas Wynart 250 acres grant. 1813: Susanna Bandy married Peter Feathers.

1816: Richard Bandy married Elizabeth Henry.

Richard and Elizabeth’s children, primarily as reported in Bandy Gallimaufry, include Mary, Solomon, Thomas, Richard, John, George, Sarah, Ann (Nancy), and Elisa (Eliza).  These children (·) are briefly discussed below.  Four sons, Thomas (who moved to Tennessee), Richard (who moved to Tennessee), John (who remained in Virginia), and George (who moved to Kentucky) each had  large numbers of descendants.  As a result each is discussed in a separate chapter: Thomas is discussed in Chapter 6, Richard in Chapter 7, John in Chapter 8, and George in Chapter 9.

·                     Mary Bandy (193, 16-375) (1744 - ? ) who married Thomas Lewis (193, 16-376).

·                     Solomon Bandy  (71, 15-160) (1748 - ?). A Solomon Bandy was listed as serving in the Revolutionary Army in Warren County, North Carolina (see Chapter 10). That is the only known contemporaneous reference to Solomon. He is alternatively described as being Richard or Thomas’ twin.  The fact that the one contemporaaneous reference is in North Carolina does raise the possibility that Solomon is related to the Bandys who lived there (see Chapter 3 which presents the possibility of Solomon being James’ son).  However, the fact that his assumed brother Thomas, listed below, did serve in North Carolina does leave open the possibility of Solomon being Thomas’ brother.

The reference to a Simon Bandy serving in the North Carolina militia does leave room for the possibility that the reference to Solomon could actually be to Simon.  That Simon may well be the Simon Bundy who settled near Gap Creek in 1782 in what is now Washington County, Tennessee, but was then part of North Carolina (see Chapter 10).

An Internet source lists Solomon’s wife as Nancy Ann.  No support for that possible marriage is known.

An alternative suggestion regarding  Solomon Bandy (and Rachel Bandy who married John Baker, Sr in 1779 in South Carolina.[4]) is that they are children of James Bandy (see chapter 3).  Rachel and John lived in Abbeville, South Carolina, and both died in South Carolina. The basis for listing Rachel and Solomon as James’ children is unknown. The reference to Solomon is contrary to the common assumption that he is the son of Richard.

·                     Thomas Bandy (110, 15-1) (June 22, 1748 - October 18, 1835) was born in Cumberland County, Virginia. He enlisted as a private from Bedford County, Virginia on August 1, 1781, He was in the Battle of Guilford Court House, in North Carolina, and the siege of Yorktown. He lived in Botetourt County, Virginia. He was executor of his father’s will. Thomas moved to Tennessee where he died.  Thomas married twice, first to Mary Polly Christian (110, 15-2) ( ? - about 1776) on November 22, 1768 and then to Nancy Burns (111, 15-0) (March 1757 - August 12, 1852) on October 12, 1777 in Bedford County, Virginia. Thomas was listed in the Virginia census for 1810 and the Tennessee censuses for 1820 and 1830.  Nancy was listed in the Tennessee census for 1850 as age 95. See Chapter 6 for details regarding descendants.

·                     Richard Bandy (156, 16-1) (1750 - November 1815) probably was born in Cumberland County, Virginia.  Richard registered for recruitment in Revolutionary War in Captain Pawling’s Co. 15th District, Botetourt County. Richard and wife Jane (156, 16-370) had ten children.  Although family tradition indicates that Richard’s father married Jane Cummins, it is possible that it was this Richard.  See Chapter 7 for details regarding descendants.

·                     John Bandy (191, 16-371) (1752-1818) served in Capt. Neeley’s Company during the Revolution.  Probably another John Bandy served in the 8th Maryland Regiment.  John married Lucy Christian (191, 16-372). John is listed in the Virginia census of 1810. Lucy is listed in the 1820 Virginia census.  They are attributed eight children.  See Chapter 8 for details regarding descendants.

·                     George Bandy (124, 15-139) (1758-1838) was born in Botetourt County, Virginia and died in Breckinridge County, Kentucky. He married Drusilla Meador (1760 - 1799). He is listed in the 1820 and 1830 Kentucky censuses. See Chapter 9 for details regarding descendants.

·                     Sarah Bandy (195, 16-379) (1765- ? ) married Benjamin Jordan (195, 16-380) (764- ? ).

·                     Ann (Nancy)Bandy  (196, 16-379) (1770- ? ).  In his will Richard left property to Henry Bandy son of Ann Bandy.  She married James Nabors (196, 16-382) (1770 - ? ) in Bedford County on March 12, 1791.  The fact that Henry is referred to with the name Bandy suggests that he may not be James Nabor’s son.

??        Henry Bandy (196, 17-492) (1791 - ? ).

·                     Elisa (Eliza) Bandy (194, 16-377) (1778- ? ).  The date of her birth is questionable as she may have had children born as early as 1764.  Records suggest that she married Aquella Greer (194, 16-378) (1762 - before 1795). Bertie G. O’Quin provides detailed information regarding this marriage which  includes several children not listed elsewhere. The information indicates they lived earlier than previously believed (e.g., Aquella was born about 1744 and died in 1783). The couple were married in the 1760's and lived in Franklin County, Virginia. She married Samuel Arrington on December 20, 1800. He had purchased Aquella’s land from Aquella’s heir in 1798. It is possible that there were more than one couple with the same names.

??        William Greer (April 6, 1768 - ? ) married Delihah Hayes in Green County, Georgia in 1794 and they lived in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. He apparently returned to Franklin County, Virginia to settle father’s estate.

??        Asa Greer (about 1772 - ? ) married Rebecca Neighbors. They lived and died in White County, Illinois.

??        Richard Greer (1773 - March 14, 1798) married Nancy Reynolds.

??        (Martha) Patsey Greer (466, 17-641) (1774 - ? ) married Braxton Drake. They had a large family, and she died during childbirth.

??        Elijah Greer

??        Aquilla Greer (324, 17-423)(1779 - ? ) married Elizabeth Smith. They lived and died in Gallatin County, Illinois.

??        Elizabeth Greer (340, 17-422) (1781 - November 1860) married Asa Dillon. She died in Monroe County in what is now West Virginia.

Richard married Lucy Justice (72, 16-383) (1795 - ?) on May 23 1794 and they had one daughter, Katherine (Katy) (72, 16-383) born in 1795, the year of Richard’s death. Lucy Justice may have married George Womack in 1797. Descendants of George T. Monical (Monicle) report his marriage to Lucy Banday on August 9, 1797 in Botetourt County, Virginia.  Possibly the confusion extends form hand written records where the names are difficult to read.  April 8, 1800 Botetourt County records identify Katy Bandy as an orphan and identify Lucy Bandy as her guardian.  This suggests that Katy may have been someone else’s child, and it suggests that the 1797 marriage did not last long. Possibly she is Richard’s grandchild. If Richard was Katy’s father, he was approximately age 75 at the time of her birth.

A Catherine Bandy married Lewis Marrow in Wayne County, Indiana on March 11, 1821. Katharine Bandy married Thomas Dotson in Shelby County, Kentucky on December 8, 1818. There is no evidence, other than the coincidental name and age proximity that indicates either Catherine or Katharine is Richard’s daughter.

Avy Bandy of Cumberland County

Avy Bandy (75, 14-38), assumed to be either Richard's brother or sister-in-law, had at least two sons, Thomas Bandy (15-74 (1745 - ? ) and George Bandy (192, 16-373) (1750 - June 1830) in Cumberland County.  Cumberland County, Virginia Court Records on August 25, 1755 state, “Ordered that the Church wardens of Southam Parish bind out Thomas and George Bandy sons of Avy [?] Bandy according to law.”  The middle letter of the name is unclear, so some think the name is Amy and others think it is Ary.  The assumption is that the record indicates that Thomas and George are bound out as apprentices because they were orphaned or abandoned.  Avy’s George moved to North Carolina (see the next chapter). Thomas' fate is uncertain. For reasons presented below, he is assumed to be the father of Thomas C.

·                     George Bandy (192, 16-373) (1750 - October 1822), who married Christina Slinkard (192, 16-374) (? - June 1830), is discussed in the next chapter which describes Bandys found in North Carolina as George and Christina are more usually associated with North Carolina.

·                     Thomas Bandy (75, 15-74) (1745 - ? ) is listed here as the father of Thomas C. Burt Eubank suggested the theory that Avy's Thomas is the ancestor of the Tazewell County, Virginia group.  Bandy Gallimaufry reports John (191, 16-371) (1752 - 1818) (1795 Richard's son) as the first Bandy in Tazewell County.  So, this is offered as an alternative theory.  There is insufficient evidence to exclude either theory. The Annals of Tazewell County, Virginia report that Thomas Bandy, born in about 1745, in Botetourt County, Virginia married Nancy Perry and they had three children, John C. Bandy (who was born sometime around 1815), William W. Bandy (who was born sometime around 1813), and Ellen Bandy.  The Annals also report that Thomas died in Tazewell County in  1825, at the approximate age of eighty. Then, after discussing son John's family, the Annals report that Thomas Bandy married a second time to Sallie Woldrige on July 16, 1842.  As he could not have married after his death, the relationships in the Annals have always been confusing.  Children reported for the second marriage are Thomas (Jr.), Richard, Lucy, Elizabeth, and Patsy.  Lula Hankins Hunter identifies Thomas’ second wife’s name as Sarah “Sally” Beavers. Burt Eubank suggests that the account skips some relevant facts, and that the Thomas who married in 1842 was Thomas (Jr.).  Based on the 1850 Tazewell County census, the Thomas who married Sallie was born around 1783.[5]

An unresolved  mystery  is the  marriage of Thomas Bandy to Nancy Craddock, daughter of William Craddock (deceased), reported to have occurred on April 16, 1806 in Botetourt County, Virginia[6].  That marriage has caused some confusion.  Some have concluded that it is the marriage by Thomas C. who moved to Tazewell County.  A Thomas (presumably Thomas C.)  married Nancy Peery on April 7, 1806.  She is listed as the daughter of James Peery.  Tilman Crockett was the bondsman.[7]   Two marriages involving a Thomas Bandy and a Nancy taking place in Botetourt County within days of each other in 1806 can easily be confusing.  Who was involved is yet to be resolved.

Adding to all of this confusion is the fact that Benoni Banning lived in the area following the Revolutionary War, after he left Maryland and before he moved to Burke County, North Carolina suggesting that the family is somehow related to the Bannings of Maryland.

Thomas C. is discussed here along with wives Nancy Peery and Sallie Schrader Wooldridge,  their children (??), grandchildren (???), and great-grandchildren (????).  In the interest of space, great-great grandchildren (?????) are listed only if their family name is Bandy.

??        Thomas C. Bandy (407, 17-627) (1783 - 1864) moved to Tazewell County, Virginia.  An alternative theory suggests that Thomas is the son of John Bandy (191, 16-371)(1752-1818) and Lucy Christian (191, 16-372).  Thomas apparently married Nancy Peery (407, 17-519) (1785 - ? ) on April 7, 1806 in Botetourt County, Virginia, moved to Tazewell County, and there  married Sallie Schrader Wooldridge (408, 17-630) (1805 - ? ) on July 16, 1842. Thomas is listed in the 1820, 1850 and 1860 Virginia censuses. A 70 year old Sarah Bandy listed in the 1870 Virginia census is assumed to be Sally. Lula Hankins Hunter identifies Thomas’ second wife’s name as Sarah “Sally” Beavers.

Thomas and Nancy’s five children included.

???     John C. Bandy  (845, 18-708) (1811 - 1895) married Elizabeth H. Perry (845, 18-707) (1822 - ? ) on November 1, 1838, and they had six children. He married Amanda Bryson Kinzer on September 14, 1865 in Tazewell County, Virginia. Listed in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 Virginia censuses.

John and Elizabeth’s children include:

????   Thomas Bandy (845, 19-1064).

????   George W. Bandy (1533, 19-1063) (March 1841 - ? ) married Harriet Perry (1533, 19-1173) (1841 - ? ) on December 16, 1861, and they had no children. George W. Bandy served in Virginia’s 8th Calvary, Company H in the Civil War. Listed in the 1870 Virginia census.

????   Nancy Bandy (845, 19-2408) (1843 - ? ).

????   Eleanor Bandy (2011, 19-2409) (1848 - 1901) married Charles C. Yost (2011, 19-2410) on May 20, 1868, and they had seven children.

????   John Bandy (845, 19-1065) (1852 - ? ).

????   Mary E. Bandy (1534, 19-1066) (June 1854 - ? ) married  Andrew Jackson Cress.

John Bandy of Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, and Iowa

This John Bandy (272, 16-616) (June, 4, 1794 - May 5, 1873) was born in Virginia suggesting that he may be related to the other Bandys from Virginia.[8]  John's Virginia birthplace indicates that he could be a descendent of Kendall.  It is noted that Kendall had a son under age 10 listed in his household in the 1800 Accomack County, Virginia census. Records pertaining to this John sometimes spell his last name  Banda and other times as Bundy.  However, this John married Mary VanNyes (272, 16-617) (November 11, 1799 - June 2, 1881) on April 14, 1821, probably in Kentucky.  That family's records indicate the spelling as Bandy. [9]  Nevertheless, it is not entirely clear what the early spelling of the name may have been raising the possibility that he could be related to the Bannings discussed in the previous chapter.  Some references to the name list it as Bundy and others as Banda. According to a family story, John and a younger brother were orphaned. John and his brother lived with an uncle, and when the uncle died, John was placed into an apprenticeship while his younger brother was placed with a family named Brady or Bradley. John  ran away from his master and enlisted in the army at Madison, Indiana in 1812 and served two enlistments. He returned to look for his brother, but found that the family had moved west, perhaps to Texas.[10]

Apparently, John is listed twice in the 1830 Indiana census, once in Switzerland County and also in Tippecanoe County suggesting that the family moved at about the time of the census (pp. 32 and 121 respectively).  The information in the census is generally consistent for the two listings and the subsequently reported birthplaces for children include both counties. In 1840, the family is listed in Des Moines, Iowa, and in 1850, the family is listed in Scott County, Iowa (pp. 153 and 390 respectively).  By 1860, they are back in Des Moines, and they are still listed there in 1870 (pp. 814 and 586 respectively).

It is not clear whether the family is related to  Keren, Thomas, either William or George or other Indiana Bandys discussed below.  It is noted, however, that the move from Switzerland County to Tippecanoe County would have take John through the part of the state where the others lived at a time when they all were there.   In the 1870 census, Drinkard Bandy, age 68, and Martha, age 40, are listed in Wayne County, Iowa (p. 390).  Drinkard, William, and George are all sons of George, grandson of 1795 Richard. Richard, age 42, and Mary E., age 36, and their children are listed in Fremont County, Iowa. This Richard, apparently,  is the son of Samuel, grandson of Richard, great grandson of Thomas, and great great grandson of 1795 Richard.

John's first wife was Rachel Bergen.[11]  There is no record of their having children.  John and Mary's 12 children include.[12]

[5]An interesting marriage is reported in LDS software between Thomas Bandy and Catharine Terry on April 7, 1779 in the St. Joseph-Trenton, Missouri area.  There is no additional information nor is there any indication of the source of this report.  Missouri was controlled by Spain at the time of this reported marriage. Spain was paying bounties to settlers to encourage development.  No confirmation of this  marriage can be found. In a strange coincidence the same LDS database lists a marriage between Susie Banning and Charles Terry in July 1867 in Randolph, Missouri. It is possible that the date of 1779 is a reporting error and should be 1879. The presence of Bandys and Bannings at the same location is reported in Chapter 1.

An alternative explanation that is consistent with these facts, but entirely speculative, is that Avy's Thomas married Catharine Terry in 1779, and they had son Thomas in 1783.  The father married Nancy Craddock in 1806, and the son married Nancy Perry in the same year.  That would explain the confusion over the marriages.  The son's second marriage was to Sallie Woldridge in 1842.  In general, assumptions are independent, in that the first marriage does not have to have been to Catharine Terry for the other assumptions to be possible.
